Hello,

Wonder about above title? Yes, Annyeong Haseo was a korean greeting when you meet people. No, I mean you may be wondering why I put “Going to Small” as a header and what are the pictures in the bar about. Well, going to small means the will to study small things. Because I mainly will talk about nanoscale things, so I hope you will get familiar with this small scale (nanoscale is a dimension with a distance of 1 meter/1 billion). Actually, you can do a lot of things in this scale, ex. your computer’s processor is consisted of million of tiny transistors which has a detail in several tens of nanometers. You may find in details on this scaling concept in my next posts.

My header pictures are Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) micographs of some materials developed in my lab. The first picture is the structure of nanohairs, a tiny hair with 1000 times smaller diameter than human’s single hair.  They have a diameter of ~50 nm and aspect ratio of about 100 to 200. The 2nd picture is wrinkle structures I obtained by Argon ion bombardment on a polymer. It has similar structures as our brains (brain-like structure) but of course in nanometer scale. The 3rd picture is the same material as in the 2nd picture but on a patterned polymer. It shows the regular direction of stress distribution along the microchannel. The 4th  picture is a dual structure of nano/microscale surfaces for superhydrophobic application. The 5th picture is a pure water droplet characteristic on hydrophobic surfaces. The last picture is a hierarchical nano/microscale structures by combination of top-down and bottom up approaches.

There are so much interesting mechanism and applications in each pictures, if you are interested I can share them in details.

 :)
